Tantalizing Turquoise

Turquoise in my mind is inseparable from the delights of Maui. Most mornings I head to the beach for a walk and the sparkle of blues is a continuous stream of turquoise consciousness! It’s no surprise that many of my earlier paintings were of mermaids — my sea sisters who dream and dance in the waves. Who knows, maybe this also inspired my early love of glitter as one cannot visit the Pacific Ocean in the early morning without being showered in sparkles!

So the month of July is all about turquoise — that color that borrows from blue and green, from calm and growth, from land and sea, to create this magical color in between. Even looking at synonyms for turquoise, creates a tingling feeling: aquamarine, peacock blue, cerulean blue. Blue can be traditional, so can green, but somehow turquoise is slightly edgy, a rebel from the primary colors, riding on a wave that flows from more blue to more green and all moods in between!

A few years ago I hosted a fabulous mermaid event at The Shops at Wailea. We had two mermaid costume contests, one for the keiki (children) and one for adults. If you know Maui, you know this was a very popular contest! And yes, I, as the hostess, came attired as my mermaid alter ego. We had mermaid cupcakes, of course Hawaiian music, and a wonderful time was had by all. This is part of my turquoise heritage. You can read more about the Mermaid Extravaganza here. I’ve embedded the video from the event so you can watch it here. It’s full of turquoise!

As the month progresses, we’ll be posting my turquoise art to my Instagram. I hope you’ll connect with me there. Here are some of the ones we’ve created to share the turquoise magic of water and sky and summer. Be sure to look in my Shop also — I suspect you’ll fund something there you like!
